The book starts with this paper, followed by a novel psychological/evolutionary theoretical discussion of consciousness, and then a historically oriented presentation of relevant functions of consciousness, from memory to attention to emotion, drawing in part on Mandler’s publications between 1975 and 2000.<br />The manuscript is controversial; it is outspoken and often judgmental. The book does not address speculations about the neurophysiological/brain bases of consciousness, arguing that these are premature, and it is highly critical of philosophical speculations, often ungrounded in any empirical observations. In short it is a psychological approach — pure and simple. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/aicr.40.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027251602.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027251602.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/aicr.40.pb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/aicr.40.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/aicr.40.pb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/aicr.40.pb.png 10 01 JB code aicr.40.01pre vii viii 2 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code aicr.40.02int ix xii 4 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">Prejudices and prolegomena</Subtitle> 10 01 JB code aicr.40.03con 1 27 27 Article 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">1.
