Using evidence from pronominal, psychological experiencer, and inalienable constructions, it argues that both accusative and dative are structural cases in French and that this duality is reflected in a parallel limit on argument projection. Larson’s single complement hypothesis, which allows a maximum of two internal arguments, provides the theoretical justification for this proposal. The testing ground for the binary hypothesis is a group of nonthematic subject constructions involving undative as well as unaccusative verbs, linking, according to Burzio’s generalization, case suspension and lack of an internal argument. The investigation of these constructions and those involving partitive case provides not only a theoretically significant contribution to our understanding of grammar, but also a motivated explanation for a number of empirical problems in French. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/cilt.132.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027236364.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027236364.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/cilt.132.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/cilt.132.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/cilt.132.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/cilt.132.hb.png 10 01 JB code cilt.132.01min 1 1 Chapter 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Minimalist syntactic representation</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.02cas 22 1 Chapter 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Case and argument structure</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.03una 51 1 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Unaccusative verbs and affected datives</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.04cas 83 1 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Case defective psych verbs</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.05cas 111 1 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Case suspending pronominals</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.06ina 138 1 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Inalienable undatives</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.07cas 160 1 Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Case suspension and complement structure</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.08app 167 1 Miscellaneous 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Appendix: grammaticality survey</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.09ref 171 1 Miscellaneous 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.10ind 191 1 Miscellaneous 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Index of authors</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.132.11ind 195 1 Miscellaneous 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Index of subjects</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19960229 1996 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027236364 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 105.00 EUR R 01 00 88.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 158.00 USD S 1173 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code CILT 132 Hb 15 9789027236364 13 96002115 BB 01 CILT 02 0304-0763 Current Issues in Linguistic Theory 132 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Case Suspension and Binary Complement Structure in French</TitleText> 01 cilt.132 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/cilt.132 1 A01 Julia Herschensohn Herschensohn, Julia Julia Herschensohn University of Washington 01 eng 212 xi 200 LAN009000 v.2006 CF 2 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.GENER Generative linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.ROM Romance linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.SYNTAX Syntax 06 01 Adopting the theoretical framework of the minimalist program, this study of syntactic limitations on complement configuration investigates the link between thematic external arguments and case.
