An appendix details a number of 20th century systems for transcribing their phonology into Roman letters.<br />Major topics include Altaic contact-influence on Chinese, early native understanding of the tables’ meaning, the phonological work of Yuen Ren Chao, and <i>Stammbaumtheorie</i>/diasystemic thinking about Chinese. New reconstructions of Han and “Common Dialectal” phonology appear here, as do complete texts and translations of the Shouwen fragments and <i>Yunjing</i> preface. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/cilt.271.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027247858.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027247858.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/cilt.271.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/cilt.271.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/cilt.271.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/cilt.271.hb.png 10 01 JB code cilt.271.01bra 1 34 34 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">What Are Rime Tables and What Do They Mean?</Subtitle> 1 A01 David Prager Branner Branner, David Prager David Prager Branner 10 01 JB code cilt.271.02par Section header 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Part I: Rime-Tables in Chinese Reconstruction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.271.03cha 37 46 10 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">On the Principle of the Four Grades</TitleText> 1 A01 Abraham Chan Chan, Abraham Abraham Chan 10 01 JB code cilt.271.04li 47 58 12 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Four Grades</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Four Grades</TitleWithoutPrefix> <Subtitle textformat="02">An Interpretation from the perspective of Sino-altaic language contact</Subtitle> 1 A01 Chris Wen-Chao Li Li, Chris Wen-Chao Chris Wen-Chao Li 10 01 JB code cilt.271.05lim 59 82 24 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">On Old Turkic Consonanticism and Vocalic Divisions of Acute Consonants in Medieval Hàn Phonology</TitleText> 1 A01 An-King Lim Lim, An-King An-King Lim 10 01 JB code cilt.271.06sch 83 96 14 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Qièyùn System ‘Divisions’ as the Result of Vowel Warping</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Qièyùn System ‘Divisions’ as the Result of Vowel Warping</TitleWithoutPrefix> 1 A01 Axel Schuessler Schuessler, Axel Axel Schuessler 10 01 JB code cilt.271.07par Section header 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Part II: The History of Rime Table Texts and Reconstruction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.271.08cob 99 122 24 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Reflections on the Shouwen Fragments</TitleText> 1 A01 W.
