Since, in at least a narrow sense, syntax <i>is</i> the study of how meaningful elements are put together to form sentences, a preoccupation with word order would seem inherent in any syntactic study. However, the focus implied by ‘word order studies’ is anything but trivial, going as it does to the heart of two vital areas of linguistic theory: language universals, and the form of linguistic models. The present collection of papers offers the reader an opportunity to examine some of the more recent ideas in this broad area, concentrating on some of the more controversial issues within the generative-transformational model. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/cilt.7.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027209085.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027209085.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/cilt.7.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/cilt.7.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/cilt.7.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/cilt.7.hb.png 10 01 JB code cilt.7.01edi vii ix 3 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Editor&#8217;s preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code cilt.7.02vin 1 22 22 Article 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Word order and grammatical theory</TitleText> 1 A01 Nigel Vincent Vincent, Nigel Nigel Vincent 10 01 JB code cilt.7.03hud 23 69 47 Article 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Is deep structure linear?</TitleText> 1 A01 Grover Hudson Hudson, Grover Grover Hudson 10 01 JB code cilt.7.04san 71 98 28 Article 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Constraints on constituent ordering</TitleText> 1 A01 Gerald A.
