This title describes its grammatical features and discusses extra-linguistic factors contributing to the dialect's preservation or accelerating its decline. 03 00 This book provides the first extensive description of Texas Alsatian, a critically-endangered Texas German dialect, as spoken in Medina County in the 21st century. The dialect was brought to Texas in the 1840s by colonists recruited by French entrepreneur Henri Castro and has been preserved with minimal change for six generations. Texas Alsatian has maintained lexical, phonological, and morphosyntactic features which differentiate it from the prevalent standard-near varieties of Texas German. This study both describes its grammatical features and discusses extra-linguistic factors contributing to the dialect’s preservation or accelerating its decline, e.g., social, historical, political, and economic factors, and speaker attitudes and ideologies linked to cultural identity. The work’s multi-faceted approach makes its relevant to a broad range of scholars such as dialectologists, historical linguists, sociolinguists, ethnographers, and anthropologists interested in language variation and change, language and identity, immigrant dialects, and language maintenance and death. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/clu.6.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027202888.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027202888.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/clu.6.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/clu.6.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/clu.6.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/clu.6.hb.png 01 01 JB code clu.6.01tab 06 10.1075/clu.6.01tab xi xii 2 Miscellaneous 1 01 04 List of tables List of tables 01 01 JB code clu.6.02fig 06 10.1075/clu.6.02fig xiii xiv 2 Miscellaneous 2 01 04 List of figures List of figures 01 01 JB code clu.6.03ill 06 10.1075/clu.6.03ill xv xvi 2 Miscellaneous 3 01 04 List of illustrations List of illustrations 01 01 JB code clu.6.04ch1 06 10.1075/clu.6.04ch1 1 34 34 Chapter 4 01 04 Chapter One.
