He presents a first inventory of elite discourse and racism in Spain and Latin America by examining discursive reactions in Spain to recent immigration, as well as age-old racism and ethnicism in text and talk in Latin America (especially Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile). Through careful analysis of the media, political discourse, textbooks and other public discourses in these countries he shows that discursive euro-racism is ubiquitous also in countries outside Europe. Spain reproduces, but as yet in a less radical way, the kind of racist discourse we find elsewhere in Western Europe. In Latin America, ethnicism and racism against the indigenous peoples and against Afrolatins has prevailed in elite discourse since colonialism and slavery. <br />This is the first integrated study of discursive racism in the Latin world and provides a useful framework for similar research. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/dapsac.14.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027227041.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027227041.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/dapsac.14.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/dapsac.14.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/dapsac.14.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/dapsac.14.hb.png 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.01pre ix x 2 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.02ack xi xii 2 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgements</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.03rac 10 12 3 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Racism and discourse</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.04eli 13 82 70 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Elite discourse and racism in Spain</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.05eli 83 163 81 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Elite discourse and racism in Latin America</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.06not 165 1 Miscellaneous 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Notes</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.07ref 167 183 17 Miscellaneous 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.08app 185 187 3 Miscellaneous 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Appendix</TitleText> 10 01 JB code dapsac.14.09ind 189 197 9 Miscellaneous 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Index</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 20050705 2005 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027227041 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 105.00 EUR R 01 00 88.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 158.00 USD S 169005299 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code DAPSAC 14 Hb 15 9789027227041 13 2005048399 BB 01 DAPSAC 02 1569-9463 Discourse Approaches to Politics, Society and Culture 14 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Racism and Discourse in Spain and Latin America</TitleText> 01 dapsac.14 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/dapsac.14 1 A01 Teun A. van Dijk Dijk, Teun A. van Teun A. van Dijk Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona 01 eng 210 xii 198 LAN004000 v.2006 GTC 2 24 JB Subject Scheme COMM.CGEN Communication Studies 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.DISC Discourse studies 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.PRAG Pragmatics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.ROM Romance linguistics 06 01 This new book extends Teun A. van Dijk’s earlier research on discursive racism to the Latin world.
