Innis The 33 sections of this classic text by Hoffbauer have a twofold focus: a descriptive inventory of signs, and a comparison of the expressive and cognitive powers of different sign systems. Using his sign typology as a point of departure, Hoffbauer inquires into the elements of matter and form both necessary and adequate to arrive at a definition of the sign. His purpose in doing so is to present his own version of a general sign theory after pointing out significant errors and weaknesses in the <i>characteristicae universalis</i> of Leibniz, Becher, Toennis, Kalmar, etc. Against the background of criticism of the contemporary deductive sign theories of Lambert, Baumgarten, Mendelssohn, Daries, Wilkins, Kircher and others, Hoffbauer's general semiology gives shape to an outline of a deductive-hypothetical theory of signs. In this historical perspective, Hoffbauer's semiology is of outstanding importance and provides the opportunity to think through once again central and permanent problems of the general science of signs. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/fos.4.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027232748.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027232748.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/fos.4.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/fos.4.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/fos.4.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/fos.4.hb.png 10 01 JB code fos.4.01tra vii 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Translator&#39;s Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code fos.4.02bio xxiii 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Biographical Sketch of Johann Christoph Hoffbauer (from <i>Allgemeine Encyklop&#228;die der Wissenschaften und K&#252;nste</i>)</TitleText> 10 01 JB code fos.4.03tra 1 1 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Translation</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02"><i>Semiological Investigations or Topics Pertaining to the General Theory of Signs</i></Subtitle> 10 01 JB code fos.4.04ori 43 1 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Original Latin Text</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02"><i>Tentamina Semiologica sive Quaedam Theoriam Generalem Signorum Spectantia</i></Subtitle> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19911025 1991 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027232748 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 110.00 EUR R 01 00 92.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 165.00 USD S 300 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code FOS 4 Hb 15 9789027232748 13 91016111 BB 01 FOS 02 0168-2555 Foundations of Semiotics 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Semiological Investigations, or Topics Pertaining to the General Theory of Signs</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">Reprint of the original Latin text <i>Tentamina semiologica, si ve quaedam generalem theoriam signorum spectantia</i> (1789)</Subtitle> 01 fos.4 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/fos.4 1 A01 Johann Cristoph Hoffbauer Hoffbauer, Johann Cristoph Johann Cristoph Hoffbauer 2 B06 Robert E.
