A popular way to achieve this goal is the use of phraseological modifications. Based on previous findings from various linguistic disciplines, this book provides an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on the reception of substitutions like <i>More than Meats the Eye</i>. It develops an empirical methodology for investigating the complex cognitive processes involved, using a large sample of authentic examples for illustration. Along these lines, this volume not only shows what associations readers make when they encounter a lexical substitution and what factors facilitate the recognition of the canonical form. It also addresses the question of how meaning is constructed in terms of Conceptual Integration Theory and establishes an experimentally supported model of interpretation. This multifaceted perspective renders <i>Phraseological Substitutions in Newspaper Headlines: "More than Meats the Eye"</i> relevant to scholars and advanced students from a wide range of linguistic areas, such as phraseology, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and humour research, but also to interested journalists. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/hcp.46.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027224002.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027224002.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/hcp.46.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/hcp.46.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/hcp.46.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/hcp.46.hb.png 10 01 JB code hcp.46.00lof ix x 2 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of figures</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.00lot xi 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of tables</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.00xab xiii xiv 2 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of abbreviations</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.00xac xv xvi 2 Miscellaneous 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgements</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.01ch1 1 4 4 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.02ch2 5 34 30 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Phraseological units and their modification</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.03ch3 35 64 30 Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Phraseological modification in&#160;newspaper&#160;headlines</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.04ch4 65 103 39 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The reception of modified phraseological units in newspaper headlines</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">reception of modified phraseological units in newspaper headlines</TitleWithoutPrefix> <Subtitle textformat="02">An association test</Subtitle> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.05ch5 105 151 47 Chapter 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">A reception-oriented analysis of the relation between <i>substituens </i>and <i>substituendum</i></TitleText> <TitlePrefix>A </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">reception-oriented analysis of the relation between <i>substituens </i>and <i>substituendum</i></TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.06ch6 153 198 46 Chapter 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The meaning of substitutions</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">meaning of substitutions</TitleWithoutPrefix> <Subtitle textformat="02">An analysis in terms of conceptual blending</Subtitle> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.07ch7 199 209 11 Chapter 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">A new model of interpretation</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>A </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">new model of interpretation</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.08ch8 211 215 5 Chapter 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conclusion and outlook</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.09ref 217 236 20 Miscellaneous 13 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.10ai 237 239 3 Miscellaneous 14 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Name index</TitleText> 10 01 JB code hcp.46.11si 241 243 3 Miscellaneous 15 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Subject index</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 20140708 2014 John Benjamins B.V. 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027224002 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 90.00 EUR R 01 00 76.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 135.00 USD S 584015265 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code HCP 46 Hb 15 9789027224002 13 2014013840 BB 01 HCP 02 1387-6724 Human Cognitive Processing 46 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Phraseological Substitutions in Newspaper Headlines</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">“More than Meats the Eye”</Subtitle> 01 hcp.46 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/hcp.46 1 A01 Sylvia Jaki Jaki, Sylvia Sylvia Jaki University of Hildesheim, Germany 01 eng 259 xvi 243 LAN009000 v.2006 CFG 2 24 JB Subject Scheme COMM.CGEN Communication Studies 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.COGN Cognition and language 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.PRAG Pragmatics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.PSYLIN Psycholinguistics 06 01 The major purpose of newspaper headlines is to trigger the reader’s interest.
