Using an extensive collection of naturally occurring data, the author proposes an image-schematic interpretation for each of the productive prefixes be-, ver-, er-, ent-, zer-, um-, über-, unter-, and durch-. These abstract semantic patterns underlie a remarkable range of particular meanings, and they consistently account for subtle contrasts between prefixed verbs and alternative constructions such as simple verbs, particle verbs, and verbs with other prefixes. Furthermore, the author develops a schematic meaning for the prefixed verb construction itself. This grammatical meaning reflects the interpreter’s perspective and attentional focus as the objective event is imagined to unfold. Underlying all of these proposals is a novel conception of meaning as a dynamic and flexible process with a constantly active role for the interpreter. This volume will be of great value to cognitive linguists as well as scholars and students of German who want to gain insights into a central and puzzling part of the morphosyntax and semantics of the German language. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/hcp.49.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027246653.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027246653.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/hcp.49.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/hcp.49.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/hcp.49.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/hcp.49.hb.png 01 01 JB code hcp.49.001lof 06 10.1075/hcp.49.001lof xi xi 1 Miscellaneous 1 01 04 List of figures List of figures 01 eng 01 01 JB code hcp.49.002lot 06 10.1075/hcp.49.002lot xii xii 1 Miscellaneous 2 01 04 List of tables List of tables 01 eng 01 01 JB code hcp.49.003pre 06 10.1075/hcp.49.003pre xiii xiv 2 Miscellaneous 3 01 04 Preface Preface 01 eng 01 01 JB code hcp.49.00intro 06 10.1075/hcp.49.00intro 1 10 10 Miscellaneous 4 01 04 Introduction Introduction 01 eng 01 01 JB code hcp.49.01ch1 06 10.1075/hcp.49.01ch1 11 52 42 Chapter 5 01 04 Chapter 1.
