The aim of the work <i>Catalan Sociolinguistics. State of the Art and Future Challenges</i> is to give an account, in a summary way, of the major topics dealt with by the study of the relation between language and society in the Catalan language community, and the extent to which international approaches have been received and how they have been adapted to the Catalan domain.<br />Every tradition has interpreted this interaction with specific approaches. The Catalan tradition, for example, has opted for a vision that integrates a wide range of studies on different themes (economy, law, political science, communication, ecology, linguistic variation, anthropology, and so on). So, in the book you are holding, the authors of the various chapters, recognised specialists in their fields, have provided complementary views that will enable us to make an overall analysis, something that was urgently needed in the context of the ultimate aim of bringing internal consistency to the discipline.

Almost five decades after its foundation, Catalan sociolinguistics is a vigorous discipline. It should be said, however, that the magnitude of the research carried out reveals a knowledge area with extremely vague limits. On the whole, Catalan sociolinguistics still presents a clearly sociological bias. The sociology of language is still the object of most of the scientific output by a critical mass of researchers who largely insist on empathising with the communicative viability of Catalan. Of course, the initial militancy following its foundation has been toned down, but even so, controversial approaches persist. Despite the emphasis I have given to the section on macrosociology, Catalan sociolinguistics has also been active in the fields of variationism, the ethnography of communication and, in particular, pragmatics. The contributions made by microsociolinguistics show that Catalan sociolinguistics is a multidimensional entity with an ever-increasing diversity of interests.

In 1973 a small group of scholars from the Catalan Countries joined to form the Catalan Group of Sociolinguistics (GCS). Their mission was to promote the planning of the Catalan language and sociolinguistic studies in this area. Their first public appearance was at the 8th Congress of Sociology (Toronto, 1974), where, thanks to L.V. Aracil – one of the promoters of GCS –, a session on the Catalan language was organised, the material from which was published in 1977 in the first issue of the annual review Treballs de Sociolingüística Catalana. In 1981, GCS had eighteen associates and by 2005, the group’s expansion led to its becoming the Association of Catalan Language Sociolinguists (ASOLC). Shortly after it became a subsidiary of the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) and in 2008 it adopted the name Catalan Society of Sociolinguistics (SOCS). Over the years this association has not only been dedicated to promoting and disseminating sociolinguistic research, but it has also been involved in numerous planning initiatives.

In Catalan sociolinguistics, ecolinguistics emerged early on and has recently undergone considerable development. The article briefly reexamines the history of this sphere of linguistics and the main areas of interest stemming from it. These areas are based on the adaptation of the epistemological model of ecology to sociolinguistics, with the adoption of concepts such as ecosystem or emergency and with a criticism of mechanical and analytical conceptions, being replaced by a holistic perspective. They are also based on the acceptance of certain proposals from ecology such as conservation and diversophilia. Finally, other areas are mentioned, such as catastrophe theory or ecological analogy in discourse analysis.

The paper begins by defining the term prospective and goes on to analyze the studies that have been carried out “significantly, only in Catalonia” to predict the future of the Catalan language. Firstly, a critical analysis is made of ‘pseudo-prophetic’ studies – which cannot be considered prospective – that are based on an inability to contemplate a monolingual future, a dream that began with the onset of democracy. The second part of the paper deals with studies that, conversely, can be termed prospective and the third part highlights the advantages of prospective studies and suggests that they be used in language sociology, particularly in the areas of planning and language policy in order to both foresee and prevent.

Over the last century, historical linguistics has produced notable studies on the formal evolution of the Catalan language. Moreover, in recent decades Catalan sociolinguistics has been developed, connecting theory and empirical description to language policy. However, a social history of the Catalan language has not been developed nor historical sociolinguistics, strictly speaking, bar a few random examples. The reasons for this deficit are both internal (the limitations of the subject matter, the inertia and the stagnation of philological studies…) and external (the socio-political and market constraints imposed on the Catalan language). We therefore propose to move towards a new paradigm in which the linguistic diachrony is integrated within social sciences, open to self-criticism and to overcoming ideological apriorism.

In a previous work (Costa-Carreras 2016c: “La planificació de corpus sobre el català: bibliografia classificada i comentada”) I reviewed the research on Catalan normative grammar systematically. The present paper aims at updating this information, but previously it focuses on the concept of research into normative grammar by analysing what objects, objectives, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, infrastructure and actors need to be involved. So in the first part the concept of research into normative grammar is analysed, and in the second part an update of the bibliography on research in Catalan normative grammar is provided.

The aim of this chapter consists of an initial overall approach to the research carried out over the last 40 years on the process of normalising the Catalan Language in the conventional media (press, radio and television) and online. Firstly, it summarizes the research on the relationship between language policies and communication policies related to the processes of normalisation (“status planning”); secondly, the study of the general process of language standardisation in the media, (“corpus planning”); and, thirdly, the study of the processes and scope of implementation of Catalan in the media (extension of use).

This paper provides an assessment of the contribution of local political scientists to the study of the relationship between language and society in the Catalan-speaking area in the last 25 years. First, the contribution of local political scientists is quite modest in quantitative terms. As a matter of fact, it can be reduced to six people, two of whom are no longer active in the field. Second, this contribution is rather restricted in scope. Only in the areas of political theory and public policies has there been any noteworthy activity. Third, political scientists’ endeavours have had limited influence on the Catalan scholarly milieu and, more specifically, among sociolinguists, who clearly dominate the study of the relationship between language and society in the Catalan-speaking area.

This article provides a summary of language policies implemented in Catalonia since the recovery of self-government in 1979, drawing attention to their main successes and failures and to their current challenges. It distinguishes three stages regarding the governmental intervention in linguistic skills, practices and ideologies. First, a large stage (1980–2002) of initial impetus and development, characterised by a significant social consensus around the need of recovering Catalan as a democratic right and unequivocal sign of the collective identity after Franco dictatorship. Second, a stage (2003–2010) of adaptive growth, marked by a huge demo-linguistic impact of international immigration, political instability and more contestation of language policies. Third, a stage (2011–2020) of discreet work, impacted by a strong nation-building conflict between Catalonia and Spain, the rise of secessionism and its subsequent repression by the State.

The policies of public authorities on the status of Catalan since the political transition have not been planned in a systematic way, and have evolved under the disinterest and adversity of Spanish and supranational powers, without overcoming the fragmentation of regional governments and the discontinuity of actions. This paper analyses in a broad way the stages and frameworks in which these public policies on the status of Catalan have taken place. Until the end of the eighties, a linguistic normalization approach predominated, focusing on the creation of a legal and institutional framework that would allow the process of linguistic substitution to be reversed. The need for general language planning became apparent at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, but since the end of this last decade, the central idea has been the politics of language. More recently, the changes induced by the process of globalization have led to a perspective focused on linguistic sustainability, which has gained ground in the early 21st century. After the judgment 31/2010 of the Spanish Constitutional Court on the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, Spain’s policies have been particularly adverse to Catalan. Without a coordinated action of the Catalan-speaking territories being able to overcome the current subordination, the future of Catalan is uncertain.

The scientific study of linguistic law in the Catalan field begins, during the decade of the eighties of the twentieth century, with the approval of the first laws of linguistic normalization of the Autonomous Communities of the Spanish State, at a time when the development of this area of study is still incipient at European and world level. Theoretical studies share common premises, when articulated around the notions of official languages and Catalan as the own language and their projection in the regulation of linguistic uses in the different sectors, and adopt a propositional approach, often critical to the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court. As of the Judgement of 28 Of June of 2010, on the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia of 2006, this constitutional jurisprudence imposes an even stricter limits to the regional legislator, that are at the same time reinterpreted restrictively by the ordinary tribunes, which supposes a clear brake to the development of these studies. The legal and doctrinal evolution in the territories located under Andorran, French and Italian jurisdiction responds to different patterns, such as the constitutionalization of Catalan as the official language of the Andorran State in the decade of the 1990s and the interpretation and deployment of constitutional notions of linguistic minority, in Italy, and regional language, in France, of application to the Catalan language in these territories.

This article reviews the contributions made from the Catalan academia to the economy of the language. The economics of language comprises two subfields: (1) the study of the relationships between language and economic activity, and (2) the study of the social dimensions of language from the economic method in a strict sense. The production from the economy of the language in strict sense has few although original researches. Among the inquiries that have been made, stands out that is characterized by the emphasis on the value of the language itself, and not just in the exchange value of a given language. Also is remarkable the analysis of the economic and political competition between linguistic groups. In spite of the relevance of the problems dealt with, there has not been a specialization of researchers in the study of the relations between economy and language in the Catalan linguistic sphere. Lack of research brings us the problem that research is essentially replaced by untested dominant social representations about dimension of language speakers community as the only factor for market valuation and economic growth.

The paper then goes into further depth on the emergence of this discipline in the Catalan language domain and, in particular, its evolution in this sphere. This evolution is divided into five stages; two of them date back to the past century and the other three date from the 21st century. The paper then outlines the main issues that demolinguistics deals with in the Catalan sphere and, to conclude, it lists a number of key challenges that the discipline faces.

This analysis is based on the theoretical principles of Social Psychology, Sociology and Sociolinguistics. Secondly, there is a brief summary of the studies which have been carried out so far in Catalan on this topic, both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view. And finally, the conclusion outlines some suggestions and proposals, including the need for a specific theoretical-methodological framework and specific terminology, the importance of using this type of combined quantitative and qualitative analysis, and the possibility of redirecting planning towards the recovery of the Catalan language within the family.

The article surveys the main theoretical and applied debates during the Republican period in the 1930’s, the controversies about language and education in the late period of Francoist dictatorship, the many challenges associated with the definition of a school language model in the early decades of the autonomy between the 1970’s and the 1980’s, the development of a plurality of research studies connected, among others, with sociological and ethnographic perspectives, and the growing role of linguistic and cultural diversity in the first two decades of the 21st century. The article ends with a critical balance of achievement and what-to-does in the field.

This chapter reviews research in language and social psychology (LSP) as an academic area and investigates to what extent global trends are followed in Catalan sociolinguistics. The chapter is organized into three main sections. The first section reviews the relation between social psychology and sociolinguistics and provides definitions of the field and lays out the evolution of prominent themes in the study of LSP. The second section provides a chronological account of the main research topics in social psychology in Catalan sociolinguistics and shows that in the 1990–2010 period LSP research regarding Catalan was mostly dominated by studies in linguistic attitudes. In a later period, LSP became much more prominent in Catalan sociolinguistics, with a focus on attitudes, linguistic ideology, and issues connected to demographics (e.g., immigration). The third section concludes that LSP research is at the crossroads of research and practice, what is universal and what is contextual, and that the social impact of research in LSP in the Catalan-speaking territories (e.g., research on language attitudes) has been rather low.

Since ethnography is born out of anthropological science, the article focuses on ethnographic sociolinguistic research. From a theoretical and methodological framework, the notions of social meaning, speech community and context are dealt with and so is the role of indexicality, particularly non-referential indexicality. Subsequently, several phenomena that have been studied by Catalan sociolinguists following this line of research are identified and significant contributions in each area are underlined: language choice, code-switching, youth linguistic practices, social inequality and the ethnography of school, intercultural communication, language shift, language attrition and language death, language ideologies and historical linguistic ethnography. Finally, some contributions by Catalan anthropologists studying South American or African indigenous communities are described.

In this chapter, I argue for the relevance and productivity of research on “new speakers” in sociolinguistics. To this end, I discuss the historical relationships of sociolinguistics with other social sciences in terms of an ongoing adoption of concepts and methods from other disciplines. Accordingly, the concept of new speakers brings up the debates about subjectivity raised by the works of Foucault, Butler, Bhabha and other authors. I illustrate the argument by drawing on data that shows how different profiles of speakers relate to the languages of their repertoires in different ways, and how these different investments shed light on the Catalan sociolinguistic situation and on how it is experienced. I finally argue that attention to subjectivity can help connect sociolinguistics with the scholarly debates taking place around contemporary social movements such as feminism, anti-racism, the LGBT movement and environmentalism.

The aim of this article is to show the relationship between the general goals of pragmatics and discourse analysis research in modern linguistics and the particular goals of Catalan pragmatics and discourse analysis research. It is assumed that pragmatics and discourse analysis can be considered, on the whole, to be a single scientific discipline, the general aim of which is to offer an interdisciplinary functional view of language use and communication. According to this general aim, pragmatic and discourse analysis studies seek explanations on both use processes and the relationship between language use and language structures. From these two areas of interest, a series of interdependent scientific objectives have developed that have been studied to varying extents in Catalan language research.

In the transition from autonomous linguistics, that is to say linguistics centred exclusively on the structural analysis of language, to a type of discipline with an inherent concern for the interaction between linguistics and socio-pragmatic variables, a good deal of proposals have been made, both theoretical and methodological.Without a doubt the sociolinguistic variation model is one of the most successful. This model has made it possible to advance in the social characterisation of language, as well as in the organisation and interpretation of linguistic diversity. This article deals with the various approaches that have been proposed within the field of Catalan variationist studies: from W. Labov’s orthodox proposals to the socialisation component in dialectal and geolinguistic approaches.
