On the basis of empirical (corpus- and questionnaire-based) data, it discusses a range of topics which have been addressed in the literature on the semantics and pragmatics of generics. 03 00 This monograph is a comprehensive study of the various ways in which genericity can be expressed in Dutch, dialects of Dutch, and languages related to Dutch. On the basis of empirical (corpus- and questionnaire-based) data, a wide range of topics are discussed which have been addressed in the literature on the semantics and pragmatics of generics. The empirical data presented in this book shed new light on issues crucial to the study of genericity. A number of widely accepted ideas are shown to be problematic. For example, arguments are presented against the well-known claim that progressive forms typically exclude characterizing interpretations. Furthermore, the author shows that speakers do not agree in their judgements of the acceptability of bare plurals (as well as other noun phrase types) in generic contexts. Such data are a problem for the influential thesis that bare plurals refer to kinds unambiguously. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/la.122.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027255051.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027255051.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/la.122.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/la.122.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/la.122.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/la.122.hb.png 01 01 JB code la.122.01pre 06 10.1075/la.122.01pre xv xvi 2 Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Preface and acknowledgements Preface and acknowledgements 01 eng 01 01 JB code la.122.02lis 06 10.1075/la.122.02lis xvii xviii 2 Miscellaneous 2 01 04 List of abbreviations List of abbreviations 01 eng 01 01 JB code la.122.03cha 06 10.1075/la.122.03cha 1 5 5 Chapter 3 01 04 Chapter 1.
