The main innovation of this approach is the focus on the feature composition of lexical items. From this perspective, the loss of past participle agreement in Catalan is analyzed on the basis of newly collected data as a consequence of the grammaticalization of formal features. The emergence of syntactic formal features through grammaticalization is understood as a last-resort repair mechanism for pragmatically costly derivations. Further far-reaching implications of this proposal under discussion are: the interplay between (re-)parametrization, economy, cyclicity, and grammaticalization; the characterization of free variation under a modified version of the Interface Hypothesis; and the precedence of syntactic over morphological change. This book is not only of interest to specialists in Romance languages but also to anyone working on diachronic linguistics. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/la.265.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027207975.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027207975.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/la.265.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/la.265.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/la.265.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/la.265.hb.png 01 01 JB code la.265.ack 06 10.1075/la.265.ack xi xi 1 Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Acknowledgements Acknowledgements 01 01 JB code la.265.abb 06 10.1075/la.265.abb xiii xv 3 Miscellaneous 2 01 04 List of abbreviations and symbols List of abbreviations and symbols 01 01 JB code la.265.lot 06 10.1075/la.265.lot xvii xvii 1 Miscellaneous 3 01 04 List of tables List of tables 01 01 JB code la.265.lof 06 10.1075/la.265.lof xix xix 1 Miscellaneous 4 01 04 List of figures List of figures 01 01 JB code la.265.int 06 10.1075/la.265.int 2 7 6 Chapter 5 01 04 Introduction Introduction 01 01 JB code la.265.p1 06 10.1075/la.265.p1 10 88 79 Section header 6 01 04 Part One.
