The author examines case trends in a wide range of syntactic constructions and concludes that case variation is confined to strong pronoun contexts. Data from a survey of 90 speakers provide new insights into the distributional differences between strong 1sg and non-1sg case forms and reveal systematic case variation within the speech of individuals as well as across speakers. The empirical findings suggest that morphological case is best treated as a PF phenomenon conditioned by semantic, syntactic, and phonological factors. In order to capture the way in which these linguistic factors interact to produce the pronoun case patterns exhibited by individual speakers, the author introduces a novel constraint-based approach to morphological case. Current case trends are also considered in a wider historical context and are related to a change in the licensing of structural arguments. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/la.82.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027228062.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027228062.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/la.82.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/la.82.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/la.82.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/la.82.hb.png 10 01 JB code la.82.01ack xi 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgements</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.82.02key xii 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Key to abbreviations</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.82.03int 1 1 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.82.04the 8 1 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">1.
