Within this framework, functional categories are often seen as present in every language without evidence being available in that language. This book contains arguments that even though Universal Grammar makes functional categories available, the language learner must decide whether or not to incorporate them in his or her grammar. For instance, it is shown that English has one (not two as often assumed) functional category between the complementizer and the Negation, but that languages such as Dutch, Swedish, German and Old and Middle English have none. The title of the book can be seen in terms of the direction current research is taking; it can also be seen in terms of the changes that have taken place in English. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/la.9.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027227294.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027227294.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/la.9.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/la.9.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/la.9.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/la.9.hb.png 10 01 JB code la.9.01pre ix 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.02int 1 1 Chapter 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.03the 9 1 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Functional Category T in English</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Functional Category T in English</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code la.9.04lan 27 1 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Languages without a special Node for Tense</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.05the 59 1 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Introduction of a Tense Node</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Introduction of a Tense Node</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code la.9.06ten 85 1 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Tense in Non-Finite Clauses</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.07fea 109 1 Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Feature Selection</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.08agr 139 1 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">AGRsP and Agreement Features</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.09fun 165 1 Chapter 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Functional Categories between Neg and VP</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.10asp 179 1 Chapter 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Aspect</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.11con 189 1 Miscellaneous 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conclusion</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.12not 193 1 Miscellaneous 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Notes</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.13ref 207 1 Miscellaneous 13 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.14ref 215 1 Miscellaneous 14 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References Index</TitleText> 10 01 JB code la.9.15gen 219 1 Miscellaneous 15 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">General Index</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19931028 1993 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027227294 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 105.00 EUR R 01 00 88.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 158.00 USD S 405 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code LA 9 Hb 15 9789027227294 13 93033219 BB 01 LA 02 0166-0829 Linguistik Aktuell/Linguistics Today 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Rise of Functional Categories</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Rise of Functional Categories</TitleWithoutPrefix> 01 la.9 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/la.9 1 A01 Elly van Gelderen Gelderen, Elly van Elly van Gelderen University of Groningen 01 eng 234 x 224 LAN009000 v.2006 CF 2 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.ENG English linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.GENER Generative linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.GERM Germanic linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.HL Historical linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.SYNTAX Syntax 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.THEOR Theoretical linguistics 06 01 In recent years, word order has come to be seen, within a Government Binding/Minimalist framework, as determined by functional as well as lexical categories.
