After shortly reviewing the four main uses of
the French passé composé (PC) and the main features
of TAME expression in Vietnamese, we analyze the first chapter of
L’Étranger as a corpus of
study to examine the Vietnamese translation of the PC forms. A
succession of aoristic PCs is predominantly translated into
Vietnamese by a series of verbs without markers (in their bare
form). However, when a strictly perfect use of either compound forms
in general, or of the PC in particular, are emphasized, the
translators resorts to either the markers đã or
đã…rồi. The marker rồi
explicitly indicates that a result state obtains and is valid at the
given point of reference.
