The central question posed, is: Does linguistic theory provide a basis for choosing between competing grammars — that is, an evaluation procedure for grammars? If so, then what is its form? If not, then how are we to interpret controversies between linguists as to the relative merits of competing grammars? These issues will be discussed in relation to a particular problem of evaluation in the treatment of the morphonology of final segments in Modern French. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/lis.4.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027231130.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027231130.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/lis.4.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/lis.4.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/lis.4.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/lis.4.hb.png 10 01 JB code lis.4.01pre v 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.02int 1 1 Introduction 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.03fin 13 1 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Final segments and gender inflection in French</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.04the 15 1 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Deletion Rules</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Deletion Rules</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code lis.4.05exc 59 1 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Exceptions to the Deletion Rules</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.06inv 89 1 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Invariant Adjectives</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.07the 99 1 Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Scope of the Deletion Rules</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Scope of the Deletion Rules</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code lis.4.08alt 127 1 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Alternative Solutions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.09the 157 1 Chapter 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Functional Unity of Elision and Liaison</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Functional Unity of Elision and Liaison</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code lis.4.10sum 173 1 Abstract 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Summary</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.11con 185 1 Chapter 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conclusion</TitleText> 10 01 JB code lis.4.12ref 223 1 Miscellaneous 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19810101 1981 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027231130 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 105.00 EUR R 01 00 88.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 158.00 USD S 440 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code LIS 4 Hb 15 9789027231130 13 81196964 BB 01 LIS 02 0165-7569 Lingvisticæ Investigationes Supplementa 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Generative Phonology</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">A Case Study from French</Subtitle> 01 lis.4 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/lis.4 1 A01 Nigel Love Love, Nigel Nigel Love 01 eng 249 viii 241 LAN009000 v.2006 CF 2 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.GENER Generative linguistics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.PHON Phonology 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.ROM Romance linguistics 06 01 This study is a discussion of, rather than a contribution to, generative phonology.
