A formal theory such as generative grammar is a special theory which is to be subsumed in a general theory of linguistic communication that also includes pragmatics. The tension between the psycho-formalist and the socio-functional views could be resolved in a synthesis whereby both the psychological and social natures of language are fully acknowledged. Semantics and pragmatics, representing these two natures in the study of meaning, have distinct goals, which can be defined more clearly and pursued more effectively to the extent that both their distinctness and their interdependence are recognized. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pb.i.5.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027225061.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027225061.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pb.i.5.pb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pb.i.5.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pb.i.5.pb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pb.i.5.pb.png 10 01 JB code pb.i.5.01int 1 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.i.5.02gra 9 1 Chapter 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">1.
