The main thrust of the present work is to show why truth and truth bearers lie essentially beyond the descriptive reach of semantics, and to outline a theory of truth bearers as a proper and fundamental task for pragmatics. It is also common for treatments, or definitions of truth to be confused with substantive theories about truth bearers, with a variety of unfortunate results. This monograph suggests a way of separating these tasks, and shows how many problems are thus avoided. Some emphasis is placed on the generally universal — i.e., nonlanguage-specific — character of pragmatic topics, and of truth. These issues occasion a discussion of semantic paradoxes, and of several relativities in the notion of truth. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pb.ii.2.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027225122.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027225122.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pb.ii.2.pb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pb.ii.2.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pb.ii.2.pb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pb.ii.2.pb.png 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.01pre 1 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.02par 25 1 Chapter 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Part 1: The Border with Semantics</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.03par 73 1 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Part 2: A Definition of Truth</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.04par 91 1 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Part 3: Some Objections</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.05par 145 1 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Part 4: The Relativity of Truth</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.06foo 157 1 Miscellaneous 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Footnotes</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pb.ii.2.07ref 163 1 Miscellaneous 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19810101 1981 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027225122 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 68.00 EUR R 01 00 57.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 102.00 USD S 536 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code P&b II:2 Pb 15 9789027225122 13 81189396 BC 01 P&b 02 0166-6258 Pragmatics & Beyond II:2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The True and the False</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">True and the False</TitleWithoutPrefix> <Subtitle textformat="02">The Domain of the Pragmatic</Subtitle> 01 pb.ii.2 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/pb.ii.2 1 A01 Charles Travis Travis, Charles Charles Travis 01 eng 170 vi 165 LAN009000 v.2006 CF 2 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.PRAG Pragmatics 24 JB Subject Scheme LIN.SEMAN Semantics 06 01 Pragmatics often begins by supposing that specifying and describing truth bearers is a proper task for semantics.
