Researchers interested in this new technology have concentrated on its effects in the workplace for knowledge production and dissemination or on its word processing function. The study reported here examines communication events in which the computer is the medium and views such computer-mediated communication from the perspective of language use. Its goal is to understand, through data collected from an anthropological perspective, the ways of communicating used by members of an established community of computer users. In particular, it answers the questions: (i) How do computer communicators choose among the available media and modes of communication? (ii) What are the basic and recurring discourse patterns across media and modes through which this community achieves its institutional goals of innovation and product development? (iii) How do the answers to the previous two questions inform our understanding of language use in general? 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pbns.10.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027250209.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027250209.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pbns.10.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pbns.10.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pbns.10.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pbns.10.hb.png 10 01 JB code pbns.10.01ack v 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgments</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.02set ix 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Settings and actors</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.03tra xi 1 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Transcription conventions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.04int 1 1 Introduction 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.05the Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Web of Communication</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Web of Communication</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.06ter Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Terminal Literacy</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.07con Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conversation for Action</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.08con 151 1 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conclusions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.09app 157 1 Miscellaneous 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Appendix A: Data Collection</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.10app 163 1 Miscellaneous 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Appendix B: Floor plan of Les's office</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.11app 164 1 Miscellaneous 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Appendix C: Floor plan of Park Lab</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.12not 165 1 Miscellaneous 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Notes</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.13ref 167 1 Miscellaneous 13 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.14aut 177 1 Miscellaneous 14 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Author Index</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.10.15sub 179 1 Miscellaneous 15 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Subject Index</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19911213 1991 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027250209 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 99.00 EUR R 01 00 83.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 149.00 USD S 560 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code P&bns 10 Hb 15 9789027250209 13 91027103 BB 01 P&bns 02 0922-842X Pragmatics & Beyond New Series 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conversation for Action</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">The computer terminal as medium of communication</Subtitle> 01 pbns.10 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/pbns.10 1 A01 Denise E.
