Most utterance particles do not have any semantic content (truth-conditional meaning), and few can be said to have a consistent grammatical function. They are notorious for being extremely resistant to conventional syntactic and semantic analysis. The aim of this book is to seek a better understanding of utterance particles by concentrating analytical attention on three of them; namely, LA (la55), LO (lo55), and WO (wo44). Adopting a set of theoretical assumptions and analytical methods in the tradition of Conversation Analysis within an ethnomethodological framework, an attempt is made to approach these objects by examining them in the context of interactional details in naturally occurring conversations. This book presents original accounts of, and fresh insights into these utterance particles in Cantonese. But it also raises theoretical and methodological questions of more general interest. These include, among other things, the status of data and evidence in the analysis of language, and the possibility of a socially constituted linguistics. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pbns.9.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027250193.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027250193.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pbns.9.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pbns.9.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pbns.9.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pbns.9.hb.png 10 01 JB code pbns.9.01ack i 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowlegements</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.02tra iii 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Transcription and glossing conventions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.03rom v 1 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Romanization conventions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.04int 1 1 Introduction 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction: Utterance particles in Cantonese</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.05con 17 1 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Conversation and Conversation Analysis</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.06the 53 1 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Establishment of Common Ground in Conversation: The Utterance particle LA</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Establishment of Common Ground in Conversation: The Utterance particle LA</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.07the 119 1 Calendar 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Accomplissement of Endings in Conversation: The Utterance Particle LO</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Accomplissement of Endings in Conversation: The Utterance Particle LO</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.08exp 199 1 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Expectation and Noteworthiness: The Utterance Particle WO</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.09utt 263 1 Chapter 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Utterance Particles as Conversational Objects</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.10tow 289 1 Chapter 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Towards a Socially Constituted Linguistics</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.11not 305 1 Miscellaneous 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Notes</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.12bib 313 1 Miscellaneous 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Bibliography</TitleText> 10 01 JB code pbns.9.13sub 325 1 Miscellaneous 13 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Subject Index</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19900101 1990 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027250193 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 115.00 EUR R 01 00 97.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 173.00 USD S 600 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code P&bns 9 Hb 15 9789027250193 13 90031714 BB 01 P&bns 02 0922-842X Pragmatics & Beyond New Series 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Utterance Particles in Cantonese Conversation</TitleText> 01 pbns.9 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/pbns.9 1 A01 K.K.
