Topics include: cultural discourses and speaking through puppets - genre, tradition, and style. 03 00 Linking actual instances of language use with structures of social power in francophone Belgium, Gross outlines the history and contemporary configuration of rod puppetry in Liège. The analysis of this working class performance art moves between what occurs on and off stage. As puppeteers speak in other voices, sometimes in Walloon and sometimes in French, they create a sociolinguistic model based on 19th century renditions of medieval texts, the voices of past puppeteers, and the language that surrounds them. The high level of linguistic reflexivity created by the regional language movement has led to frequent metalinguistic and metapragmatic commentaries within the puppet shows. This complex speech genre embedded in social context shows the influence of identity struggles: from local class oppositions to imperial designs abroad. Keeping a tight focus on language, Speaking in Other Voices examines the process of entextualization and recontextualization as stories of war and religion are transmitted to succeeding generations. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pbns.91.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027251107.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027251107.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pbns.91.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pbns.91.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pbns.91.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pbns.91.hb.png 01 01 JB code pbns.91.01lis 06 10.1075/pbns.91.01lis xi Miscellaneous 1 01 04 List of Photographs List of Photographs 01 eng 01 01 JB code pbns.91.02lis 06 10.1075/pbns.91.02lis xiii Miscellaneous 2 01 04 List of Charts and excerpts from scripts, performances and Walloon literature List of Charts and excerpts from scripts, performances and Walloon literature 01 eng 01 01 JB code pbns.91.03pre 06 10.1075/pbns.91.03pre xv Miscellaneous 3 01 04 Preface Preface 01 eng 01 01 JB code pbns.91.04ack 06 10.1075/pbns.91.04ack xxv Miscellaneous 4 01 04 Acknowledgements Acknowledgements 01 eng 01 01 JB code pbns.91.05not 06 10.1075/pbns.91.05not xxviii Miscellaneous 5 01 04 Note on translations and transcriptions Note on translations and transcriptions 01 eng 01 01 JB code pbns.91.06int 06 10.1075/pbns.91.06int 1 Chapter 6 01 04 1.
