Chapter 1 of this volume charts the conventions that operate at the threshold of the textual encounter as preliminary reading contracts which may shape ensuing operations. Chapter 2 shows the extent to which the reader's world knowledge is put to work in and by the decodification process. Chapter 3 sets out to outline how the reader's knowledge of genre and the intertextual repertoire is put to work. After exploring the areas that this hypothetical competence may cover, the study moves toward the related concept of performance in a final chapter entitled "Text Processing." Here again there is an assembly of perspectives through which the reading process is approached: the phenomenology of reading, text theory and semiotics, models of linguistic comprehension, and cognitive psychology have all been put to work in order to throw light on the complex operations presupposed by the act of reading. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pumrl.18.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027217288.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027217288.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pumrl.18.pb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pumrl.18.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pumrl.18.pb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pumrl.18.pb.png 01 JB code JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/pumrl.18 Amsterdam NL 00 John Benjamins Publishing Company Marketing Department / Karin Plijnaar, Pieter Lamers onix@benjamins.nl 04 01 00 19860101 C 1986 John Benjamins Publishing Company 02 WORLD WORLD US CA MX 09 01 JB 1 John Benjamins Publishing Company +31 20 6304747 +31 20 6739773 bookorder@benjamins.nl 01 https://benjamins.com 21 2 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 65.00 EUR 02 00 Unqualified price 02 55.00 01 Z 0 GBP GB US CA MX 01 01 JB 2 John Benjamins Publishing Company +1 800 562-5666 +1 703 661-1501 benjamins@presswarehouse.com 01 https://benjamins.com 21 2 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 98.00 USD 69010163 03 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code PUMRL 18 Eb 15 9789027279262 06 10.1075/pumrl.18 00 EA E107 10 01 JB code PUMRL 02 0165-8743 02 18.00 01 02 Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages 11 01 JB code jbe-all 01 02 Full EBA collection (ca. 4,200 titles) 11 01 JB code jbe-2015-all 01 02 Complete backlist (3,208 titles, 1967–2015) 05 02 Complete backlist (1967–2015) 11 01 JB code jbe-2015-literarystudies 01 02 Subject collection: Literary Studies (221 titles, 1971–2015) 05 02 Literary Studies (1971–2015) 11 01 JB code jbe-2015-pumrl 01 02 Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages (vols. 1–42, 1980–1992) 05 02 PUMRL (vols. 1–42, 1980–1992) 01 01 The Reader and the Text Interpretative Strategies for Latin American Literatures The Reader and the Text: Interpretative Strategies for Latin American Literatures 1 A01 01 JB code 868 Diana Sorensen Goodrich Goodrich, Diana Sorensen Diana Sorensen Goodrich 07 https://benjamins.com/catalog/persons/868 01 eng 11 162 03 03 xi 03 00 150 03 01 19 860/.9/98 03 1986 PN98.R38 04 Reader-response criticism--Latin America. 04 Spanish American literature--History and criticism. 10 LIT000000 12 DSB 24 JB code LIT.ROM Romance literature & literary studies 01 06 02 00 The shift toward the reader stems from a double source: the questioning of the sleuthlike approach to a text aiming at the discovery of the author's intended meaning, coupled with the recognition that the work, liberated from its dependence on the authorial voice, will generate a wealth of meanings through acts of reading. 03 00 The shift toward the reader's task may be said to stem from a double source: the questioning of the sleuthlike approach to a text aiming at the discovery and explication of the author's intended meaning, coupled with the recognition that the work, liberated from its dependence on the authorial voice, will generate a wealth of meanings through acts of reading.
