By the time he wrote this late work, Flaubert's attitude toward his characters and the role of fiction had changed to accommodate different social, political, and literary pressures. He constructed two opposing levels of meaning for each of the stories, straight and ironic, which produced a more fruitful way of addressing some of his concerns and assumptions about langauge and illusion. Included in this study are a provocative feminist reading of <i>Un Coeur</i>, an assessment of <i>Saint Julien</i> as Flaubert's attempt to come to terms with his originality as a writer, and an interpretation of <i>H&#233;rodias</i> as an autobiography of the writing process. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/pumrl.36.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027217578.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027217578.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/pumrl.36.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/pumrl.36.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/pumrl.36.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/pumrl.36.hb.png 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19911130 1991 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027217578 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 06 Institutional price 00 105.00 EUR R 01 05 Consumer price 00 36.00 EUR R 01 06 Institutional price 00 88.00 GBP Z 01 05 Consumer price 00 30.00 GBP Z 01 06 Institutional price inst 00 158.00 USD S 01 05 Consumer price cons 00 54.00 USD S 665 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code PUMRL 36 Hb 15 9789027217578 13 91030579 BB 01 PUMRL 02 0165-8743 Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages 36 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Flaubert's Straight and Suspect Saints</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">The Unity of 'Trois contes'</Subtitle> 01 pumrl.36 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/pumrl.36 1 A01 Aimee Israel-Pelletier Israel-Pelletier, Aimee Aimee Israel-Pelletier 01 eng 178 xii 165 LIT000000 v.2006 DSB 2 24 JB Subject Scheme LIT.ROM Romance literature & literary studies 06 01 Israel Pelletier argues that <i>Trois contes</i> demands a different kind of reading which distinguishes it from <i>Madame Bovary</i> and other Flaubert texts.
