In a novel approach, it systematically distinguishes between child and adult speakers, providing new insights into how they use <i>Ow!</i>, <i>Ouch!</i>, <i>Ugh!</i>, <i>Yuck!</i>, <i>Whoops!</i>, <i>Whoopsadaisy!</i> and <i>Wow!</i> in everyday spoken language. It studies in detail their acquisition by children and pinpoints changes and developments in their use throughout early childhood. The study highlights particularities displayed by child and adult speakers in general and identifies crucial differences regarding how adults use emotive interjections depending on whether they are interacting with children or other adults. This book thus offers an exhaustive overview on the functions of emotive interjections based on thorough empirical research and will appeal to linguists concerned with pragmatics, child language acquisition, the expression of emotion and interjections. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/scl.75.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027210722.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027210722.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/scl.75.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/scl.75.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/scl.75.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/scl.75.hb.png 10 01 JB code scl.75.001lot xi xiii 3 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of tables</TitleText> 10 01 JB code scl.75.002lof xv 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of figures</TitleText> 10 01 JB code scl.75.003loa xvii 1 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Abbreviations</TitleText> 10 01 JB code scl.75.004sym xix 1 Miscellaneous 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Symbols used in transcripts</TitleText> 10 01 JB code scl.75.005ack xxi 1 Miscellaneous 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgements</TitleText> 10 01 JB code scl.75.01ch1 1 4 4 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">1.
