This book presents a comprehensive study of the evolution and use of French interrogative constructions across a time span of approximately five hundred years by drawing on written sources (15th to 17th century) and oral data (19th and 20th century). Special attention is paid to the regional variation between European French and Quebec French. A variationist analysis reveals the relevant sociolinguistic factors conditioning variant choice. On the basis of the results obtained, the syntax of the different variants is modeled within the framework of generative grammar. In particular, the progressive diachronic decline and restriction of subject-verb inversion is argued to mirror the loss of verb movement. This book is of interest to anyone concerned with syntactic variation and change. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/silv.3.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027234834.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027234834.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/silv.3.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/silv.3.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/silv.3.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/silv.3.hb.png 01 01 JB code silv.3.01lis 06 10.1075/silv.3.01lis ix ix 1 Miscellaneous 1 01 04 List of figures List of figures 01 eng 01 01 JB code silv.3.02lis 06 10.1075/silv.3.02lis xi xiii 3 Miscellaneous 2 01 04 List of tables List of tables 01 eng 01 01 JB code silv.3.03ack 06 10.1075/silv.3.03ack xv xvi 2 Miscellaneous 3 01 04 Acknowledgments Acknowledgments 01 eng 01 01 JB code silv.3.04cha 06 10.1075/silv.3.04cha 1 12 12 Chapter 4 01 04 Chapter 1.
