concerns the fundamental and cognitive question of the extent to which we recognize and express living things as saliently human-like or animal-like.<br />In <i>Animacy and Reference</i> Mutsumi Yamamoto pursues two main objectives: First, to establish a conceptual framework of animacy, and secondly, to explain how the concept of animacy can be reflected in the use of referential expressions. Unlike previous studies on the subject focussing on grammatical manifestations, <i>Animacy and Reference</i> sheds light upon the conceptual properties of animacy itself and its reflection in referential processes.<br />For the research of this study the author focussed on languages that show completely different tendencies. As a result, English and Japanese &#8216;parallel corpora&#8217; are analysed yielding salient observations and opening intriguing discussions. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/slcs.46.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027230492.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027230492.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/slcs.46.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/slcs.46.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/slcs.46.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/slcs.46.hb.png 10 01 JB code slcs.46.01ack xi 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgments</TitleText> 10 01 JB code slcs.46.02lis xiii 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of Abbreviations</TitleText> 10 01 JB code slcs.46.03lis xv 1 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of Tables</TitleText> 10 01 JB code slcs.46.04lis xvii 1 Miscellaneous 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of Figures</TitleText> 10 01 JB code slcs.46.05int 1 1 Section header 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code slcs.46.06ath 2 1 Miscellaneous 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">A.
