Complexity is not seen as synonymous with “difficulty” but as an objective property of a system – a measure of the amount of information needed to describe or reconstruct it. Grammatical complexity is the result of historical processes often subsumed under the rubric of grammaticalization and involves what can be called mature linguistic phenomena, that is, features that take time to develop. The nature and characteristics of such processes are discussed in detail, as well as the external and internal factors that favor or disfavor stability and change in language. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/slcs.71.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027230812.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027230812.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/slcs.71.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/slcs.71.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/slcs.71.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/slcs.71.hb.png 01 01 JB code slcs.71.01pre 06 10.1075/slcs.71.01pre ix x 2 Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Preface Preface 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.02int 06 10.1075/slcs.71.02int 1 4 4 Article 2 01 04 Introduction Introduction 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.03inf 06 10.1075/slcs.71.03inf 5 17 13 Article 3 01 04 Information and redundancy Information and redundancy 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.04com 06 10.1075/slcs.71.04com 19 55 37 Article 4 01 04 Complexity, order, and structure Complexity, order, and structure 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.05lan 06 10.1075/slcs.71.05lan 57 74 18 Article 5 01 04 Languages as non-genetically inherited systems Languages as non-genetically inherited systems 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.06asp 06 10.1075/slcs.71.06asp 75 101 27 Article 6 01 04 Aspects of linguistic knowledge Aspects of linguistic knowledge 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.07mat 06 10.1075/slcs.71.07mat 103 118 16 Article 7 01 04 Maturation processes Maturation processes 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.08gra 06 10.1075/slcs.71.08gra 119 155 37 Article 8 01 04 Grammatical maturation Grammatical maturation 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.09pat 06 10.1075/slcs.71.09pat 157 180 24 Article 9 01 04 Pattern adaptation Pattern adaptation 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.10fea 06 10.1075/slcs.71.10fea 181 207 27 Article 10 01 04 Featurization Featurization 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.11inc 06 10.1075/slcs.71.11inc 209 259 51 Article 11 01 04 Incorporating patterns Incorporating patterns 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.12sta 06 10.1075/slcs.71.12sta 261 288 28 Article 12 01 04 Stability and change Stability and change 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.13fin 06 10.1075/slcs.71.13fin 289 296 8 Article 13 01 04 Final discussion Final discussion 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.14app 06 10.1075/slcs.71.14app 297 302 6 Miscellaneous 14 01 04 Appendix A Appendix A 01 04 Regular and irregular verbs Regular and irregular verbs 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.15ref 06 10.1075/slcs.71.15ref 303 314 12 Miscellaneous 15 01 04 References References 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.16lis 06 10.1075/slcs.71.16lis 315 316 2 Miscellaneous 16 01 04 List of abbrevations used in glosses List of abbrevations used in glosses 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.17lan 06 10.1075/slcs.71.17lan 317 321 5 Miscellaneous 17 01 04 Language index Language index 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.18aut 06 10.1075/slcs.71.18aut 323 327 5 Miscellaneous 18 01 04 Author index Author index 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.71.19sub 06 10.1075/slcs.71.19sub 329 329 1 Miscellaneous 19 01 04 Subject index Subject index 01 eng 01 JB code JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/slcs.71 Amsterdam NL 00 John Benjamins Publishing Company Marketing Department / Karin Plijnaar, Pieter Lamers onix@benjamins.nl 04 01 00 20040831 C 2004 John Benjamins Publishing Company 02 WORLD WORLD US CA MX 09 01 JB 1 John Benjamins Publishing Company +31 20 6304747 +31 20 6739773 bookorder@benjamins.nl 01 https://benjamins.com 21 11 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 115.00 EUR 02 00 Unqualified price 02 97.00 01 Z 0 GBP GB US CA MX 01 01 JB 2 John Benjamins Publishing Company +1 800 562-5666 +1 703 661-1501 benjamins@presswarehouse.com 01 https://benjamins.com 21 11 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 173.00 USD 242014166 03 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code SLCS 71 GE 15 9789027295255 06 10.1075/slcs.71 00 EA E133 10 01 JB code SLCS 02 JB code 0165-7763 02 71.00 01 02 Studies in Language Companion Series Studies in Language Companion Series 01 01 The Growth and Maintenance of Linguistic Complexity The Growth and Maintenance of Linguistic Complexity 1 A01 01 JB code 574045024 Östen Dahl Dahl, Östen Östen Dahl Stockholm University 01 eng 11 343 03 03 x 03 00 333 03 24 JB code LIN.MORPH Morphology 24 JB code LIN.SEMAN Semantics 24 JB code LIN.SYNTAX Syntax 24 JB code LIN.THEOR Theoretical linguistics 10 LAN009000 12 CF 01 06 03 00 This book studies linguistic complexity and the processes by which it arises and is maintained, focusing not so much on what one can say in a language as how it is said.
