This book is a systematic and structured exploration of the linguistic devices that Mandarin Chinese employs to express aspectual meanings. The work presented here is the first corpus-based account of aspect in Chinese, encompassing both situation aspect and viewpoint aspect. In using corpus data, the book seeks to achieve a marriage between theory-driven and corpus-based approaches to linguistics. The corpus-based model presented explores aspect at both the semantic and grammatical levels. At the semantic level a two-level model of situation aspect is proposed, which covers both the lexical and sentential levels, thus giving a better account of the compositional nature of situation aspect. At the grammatical level four perfective and four imperfective aspects in Chinese are explored in detail. This exploration corrects many intuition-based misconceptions, and associated misleading conclusions, about aspect in Chinese common in the literature. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/slcs.73.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027230836.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027230836.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/slcs.73.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/slcs.73.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/slcs.73.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/slcs.73.hb.png 01 01 JB code slcs.73.01pre 06 10.1075/slcs.73.01pre vii Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Preface Preface 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.02abb 06 10.1075/slcs.73.02abb ix Miscellaneous 2 01 04 Abbreviations and symbols Abbreviations and symbols 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.03int 06 10.1075/slcs.73.03int 1 12 12 Chapter 3 01 04 Introduction Introduction 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.04two 06 10.1075/slcs.73.04two 13 32 20 Chapter 4 01 04 Two-component aspect theory Two-component aspect theory 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.05sit 06 10.1075/slcs.73.05sit 33 88 56 Miscellaneous 5 01 04 Situation aspect Situation aspect 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.06the 06 10.1075/slcs.73.06the 89 180 92 Miscellaneous 6 01 04 The perfective aspects in Chinese The perfective aspects in Chinese 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.07the 06 10.1075/slcs.73.07the 181 244 64 Miscellaneous 7 01 04 The imperfective aspects in Chinese The imperfective aspects in Chinese 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.08asp 06 10.1075/slcs.73.08asp 245 280 36 Miscellaneous 8 01 04 Aspect marking in English and Chinese Aspect marking in English and Chinese 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.09fro 06 10.1075/slcs.73.09fro 281 286 6 Miscellaneous 9 01 04 From the study of aspect to constractive grammar From the study of aspect to constractive grammar 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.10bib 06 10.1075/slcs.73.10bib 287 296 10 Miscellaneous 10 01 04 Bibliography Bibliography 01 eng 01 01 JB code slcs.73.11ind 06 10.1075/slcs.73.11ind 297 303 7 Miscellaneous 11 01 04 Index Index 01 eng 01 JB code JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/slcs.73 Amsterdam NL 00 John Benjamins Publishing Company Marketing Department / Karin Plijnaar, Pieter Lamers onix@benjamins.nl 04 01 00 20041129 C 2004 John Benjamins Publishing Company 02 WORLD WORLD US CA MX 09 01 JB 1 John Benjamins Publishing Company +31 20 6304747 +31 20 6739773 bookorder@benjamins.nl 01 https://benjamins.com 21 19 28 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 115.00 EUR 02 00 Unqualified price 02 97.00 01 Z 0 GBP GB US CA MX 01 01 JB 2 John Benjamins Publishing Company +1 800 562-5666 +1 703 661-1501 benjamins@presswarehouse.com 01 https://benjamins.com 21 19 28 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 173.00 USD 209014168 03 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code SLCS 73 GE 15 9789027295019 06 10.1075/slcs.73 00 EA E133 10 01 JB code SLCS 02 JB code 0165-7763 02 73.00 01 02 Studies in Language Companion Series Studies in Language Companion Series 01 01 Aspect in Mandarin Chinese Aspect in Mandarin Chinese 1 A01 01 JB code 508046663 Richard Xiao Xiao, Richard Richard Xiao University of Lancaster 2 A01 01 JB code 117046664 Tony McEnery McEnery, Tony Tony McEnery University of Lancaster 01 eng 11 315 03 03 x 03 00 305 03 24 JB code LIN.CORP Corpus linguistics 24 JB code LIN.SEMAN Semantics 24 JB code LIN.SITIB Sino-Tibetan languages 24 JB code LIN.SYNTAX Syntax 24 JB code LIN.THEOR Theoretical linguistics 10 LAN009000 12 CF 01 06 03 00 Chinese, as an aspect language, has played an important role in the development of aspect theory.
