The research in this unique collection lies at the interface between the fields of bilingualism and literacy. It deepens our understanding of the significance of reading and writing as social practices and opens up new lines of inquiry for research on multilingualism. The authors incorporate theoretical and methodological insights from both fields and provide detailed accounts of everyday practices of reading and writing in different multilingual settings. The focus is primarily on linguistic minority groups in Britain and on the language and literacy experiences of children and adults in rural and urban communities. Together, the chapters of the volume build up a rich and illuminating picture of specific ways in which literacy is bound up with cultural practices and with different ways of seeing the world. They also address fundamental questions about the relationship between language, literacy and power in multi-ethnic contexts.
05
Here is a fascinating book that can deepen our understanding of literacy as a social practice and its relationship with power in multilingual and multi-ethnic settings. This volume succeeds not only in making a theoretical advance by bringing multilingualism and literacy together but also in opening up a new possibility for diverse ways of researching multilingual literacies. The power of this book lies not only in its rich and detailed accounts of multilingual literacies, but also in its vision for empowering individuals and for building an equitable society by 'subverting asymetrical relations and social inequities in our world(s)' (p.367) As a researcher and minority-language activist who shares this vision, I am grateful for this book.
Mihyon Jeon, University of Pennsylvania in Language, Culture and Curriculum Vol.15(2).
05
This is a rich and diverse collection which combines a consistency of a view point with a restatement and reflection on current thinking. As such it should prove very valuable for researchers in this area, as well as enlightening for teachers, students and policy makers.
Jean Mills, University of Birmingham, in International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism 6(6), 2003
05
This book deserves to be read again and again. It has not only opened my eyes to aspects of language and literacy in my own work, but has also made me to reflect on my role as a literacy practitioner.

This book deserves to be read again and again. It has not only opened my eyes to aspects of language and literacy in my own work, but has also made me to reflect on my role as a literacy practitioner.

This book deserves to be read again and again. It has not only opened my eyes to aspects of language and literacy in my own work, but has also made me to reflect on my role as a literacy practitioner.
