Chapter 6. Morphological valence-changing processes in Juchitán Zapotec
This study provides a detailed analysis of morphological valence-changing processes in Juchitán Zapotec (Otomanguean). In so doing, this paper seeks to make two contributions: to reinforce the relevance of identifying reflexes of the causative morpheme *o- as causative morphemes and not as segments of an allomorph of the habitual aspect, as proposed in Marlett & Pickett (1987) inter alia; and second, to reiterate the relevance of the single-geminate distinction in Zapotec languages. Extensive data sets and detailed synchronic analysis show that isolating causative morphemes, including <-u->, provides a straightforward analysis of causative derivation that is independent of the system of inflectional morphemes and is consistent with historic reconstructions proposed for Zapotec languages.
