Strong parallels across languages are found in the meanings of the verbs that become “defective” and in the functions they come to mark. The changes are documented in detail, with examples from a number of languages illustrating the effect of the changes on typology and word order, implications for the encoding of definiteness and aspect, and the relevance of notions such as discourse topic, foreground and transitivity. With respect to theoretical assumptions and terminology, the author has taken a relatively nonpartisan approach, and the discussion is accessible to students of language as well as of interest to theoreticians. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/tsl.26.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027229137.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027229137.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/tsl.26.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/tsl.26.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/tsl.26.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/tsl.26.hb.png 01 01 JB code tsl.26.01pre 06 10.1075/tsl.26.01pre ix Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Preface Preface 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.02ser 06 10.1075/tsl.26.02ser 1 Chapter 2 01 04 Serial Verbs Serial Verbs 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.03loc 06 10.1075/tsl.26.03loc 9 Chapter 3 01 04 Locative verbs and prepositions Locative verbs and prepositions 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.04ver 06 10.1075/tsl.26.04ver 31 Chapter 4 01 04 Verbs and Recipient/Benefactive marking Verbs and Recipient/Benefactive marking 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.05com 06 10.1075/tsl.26.05com 47 Chapter 5 01 04 Comitative verbs, prepositions and conjunctions Comitative verbs, prepositions and conjunctions 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.06ver 06 10.1075/tsl.26.06ver 65 Chapter 6 01 04 Verbs and object markers Verbs and object markers 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.07bey 06 10.1075/tsl.26.07bey 139 Chapter 7 01 04 Beyond conventional case roles Beyond conventional case roles 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.08com 06 10.1075/tsl.26.08com 151 Chapter 8 01 04 Complementizers and subordinating conjunctions Complementizers and subordinating conjunctions 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.09adv 06 10.1075/tsl.26.09adv 215 Calendar 9 01 04 Adverbs and auxiliaries from verbs Adverbs and auxiliaries from verbs 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.10pra 06 10.1075/tsl.26.10pra 235 Chapter 10 01 04 Pragmatics, typology and teleology Pragmatics, typology and teleology 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.11not 06 10.1075/tsl.26.11not 251 Miscellaneous 11 01 04 Notes Notes 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.12ref 06 10.1075/tsl.26.12ref 259 Miscellaneous 12 01 04 References References 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.13lan 06 10.1075/tsl.26.13lan 269 Miscellaneous 13 01 04 Language Index Language Index 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.26.14ind 06 10.1075/tsl.26.14ind 271 Miscellaneous 14 01 04 Index Index 01 eng 01 JB code JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/tsl.26 Amsterdam NL 00 John Benjamins Publishing Company Marketing Department / Karin Plijnaar, Pieter Lamers onix@benjamins.nl 04 01 00 19930806 C 1993 John Benjamins Publishing Company 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027229137 WORLD 09 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 https://jbe-platform.com 29 https://jbe-platform.com/content/books/9789027276858 21 01 06 Corporate / Library / Education price 02 120.00 EUR 01 05 Consumer price 02 36.00 EUR 01 06 Corporate / Library / Education price 02 101.00 GBP GB 01 05 Consumer price 02 30.00 GBP GB 01 06 Corporate / Library / Education price 02 180.00 USD 01 05 Consumer price 02 54.00 USD
