It considers the morphological, semantic, syntactic, pragmatic and grammatical aspects of demonstratives in a variety of languages. 03 00 All languages have demonstratives, but their form, meaning and use vary tremendously across the languages of the world. This book presents the first large-scale analysis of demonstratives from a cross-linguistic and diachronic perspective. It is based on a representative sample of 85 languages. The first part of the book analyzes demonstratives from a synchronic point of view, examining their morphological structures, semantic features, syntactic functions, and pragmatic uses in spoken and written discourse. The second part concentrates on diachronic issues, in particular on the development of demonstratives into grammatical markers. Across languages demonstratives provide a frequent historical source for definite articles, relative and third person pronouns, nonverbal copulas, sentence connectives, directional preverbs, focus markers, expletives, and many other grammatical markers. The book describes the different mechanisms by which demonstratives grammaticalize and argues that the evolution of grammatical markers from demonstratives is crucially distinct from other cases of grammaticalization. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/tsl.42.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027229427.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027229427.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/tsl.42.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/tsl.42.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/tsl.42.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/tsl.42.hb.png 01 01 JB code tsl.42.01ack 06 10.1075/tsl.42.01ack ix Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Acknowledgments Acknowledgments 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.02abb 06 10.1075/tsl.42.02abb xi Miscellaneous 2 01 04 Abbreviations Abbreviations 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.03int 06 10.1075/tsl.42.03int 1 Introduction 3 01 04 Introduction Introduction 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.04mor 06 10.1075/tsl.42.04mor 13 Chapter 4 01 04 Morphology Morphology 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.05sem 06 10.1075/tsl.42.05sem 35 Chapter 5 01 04 Semantics Semantics 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.06syn 06 10.1075/tsl.42.06syn 57 Chapter 6 01 04 Syntax Syntax 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.07pra 06 10.1075/tsl.42.07pra 93 Chapter 7 01 04 Pragmatic use Pragmatic use 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.08gra 06 10.1075/tsl.42.08gra 115 Chapter 8 01 04 Grammaticalization Grammaticalization 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.09con 06 10.1075/tsl.42.09con 157 Calendar 9 01 04 Conclusion Conclusion 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.10not 06 10.1075/tsl.42.10not 163 Miscellaneous 10 01 04 Notes Notes 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.11dat 06 10.1075/tsl.42.11dat 169 Miscellaneous 11 01 04 Data sources Data sources 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.12the 06 10.1075/tsl.42.12the 171 Miscellaneous 12 01 04 The inflectional features of pronominal demonstratives The inflectional features of pronominal demonstratives 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.13ref 06 10.1075/tsl.42.13ref 175 Miscellaneous 13 01 04 References References 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.14lan 06 10.1075/tsl.42.14lan 193 Miscellaneous 14 01 04 Language Index Language Index 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.15nam 06 10.1075/tsl.42.15nam 197 Miscellaneous 15 01 04 Name Index Name Index 01 eng 01 01 JB code tsl.42.16sub 06 10.1075/tsl.42.16sub 203 Miscellaneous 16 01 04 Subject Index Subject Index 01 eng 01 JB code JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/tsl.42 Amsterdam NL 00 John Benjamins Publishing Company Marketing Department / Karin Plijnaar, Pieter Lamers onix@benjamins.nl 04 01 00 19991215 C 1999 John Benjamins Publishing Company 02 WORLD WORLD US CA MX 09 01 JB 1 John Benjamins Publishing Company +31 20 6304747 +31 20 6739773 bookorder@benjamins.nl 01 https://benjamins.com 21 3 32 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 110.00 EUR 02 00 Unqualified price 02 92.00 01 Z 0 GBP GB US CA MX 01 01 JB 2 John Benjamins Publishing Company +1 800 562-5666 +1 703 661-1501 benjamins@presswarehouse.com 01 https://benjamins.com 21 3 32 01 00 Unqualified price 02 JB 1 02 165.00 USD 1533 03 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code TSL 42 Pb 15 9789027229434 06 10.1075/tsl.42 13 99046743 00 BC 01 240 mm 02 160 mm 08 300 gr 10 01 JB code TSL 02 0167-7373 02 42.00 01 02 Typological Studies in Language Typological Studies in Language 01 01 Demonstratives Form, function and grammaticalization Demonstratives: Form, function and grammaticalization 1 A01 01 JB code 2063 Holger Diessel Diessel, Holger Holger Diessel Max Planck Institute, Leipzig 07 https://benjamins.com/catalog/persons/2063 01 eng 11 217 03 03 xii 03 00 205 03 01 415 03 1999 P299.D46 04 Grammar, Comparative and general--Demonstratives. 10 LAN009000 12 CF 24 JB code LIN.HL Historical linguistics 24 JB code LIN.TYP Typology 01 06 02 00 This text is a revision of the author's dissertation, "Demonstratives in Cross-linguistics and Diachronic Perspective". The book describes the different mechanisms by which demonstratives grammaticalize and argues that the evolution of grammatical markers from demonstratives is crucially distinct from other cases of grammaticalization. 01 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/tsl.42.png 01 01 D502 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027229427.jpg 01 01 D504 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027229427.tif 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/tsl.42.hb.png 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/tsl.42.png 02 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/tsl.42.hb.png 03 00 03 01 01 D503 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/tsl.42.hb.png 01 01 JB code tsl.42.01ack 06 10.1075/tsl.42.01ack ix Miscellaneous 1 01 04 Acknowledgments Acknowledgments 01 01 JB code tsl.42.02abb 06 10.1075/tsl.42.02abb xi Miscellaneous 2 01 04 Abbreviations Abbreviations 01 01 JB code tsl.42.03int 06 10.1075/tsl.42.03int 1 Introduction 3 01 04 Introduction Introduction 01 01 JB code tsl.42.04mor 06 10.1075/tsl.42.04mor 13 Chapter 4 01 04 Morphology Morphology 01 01 JB code tsl.42.05sem 06 10.1075/tsl.42.05sem 35 Chapter 5 01 04 Semantics Semantics 01 01 JB code tsl.42.06syn 06 10.1075/tsl.42.06syn 57 Chapter 6 01 04 Syntax Syntax 01 01 JB code tsl.42.07pra 06 10.1075/tsl.42.07pra 93 Chapter 7 01 04 Pragmatic use Pragmatic use 01 01 JB code tsl.42.08gra 06 10.1075/tsl.42.08gra 115 Chapter 8 01 04 Grammaticalization Grammaticalization 01 01 JB code tsl.42.09con 06 10.1075/tsl.42.09con 157 Calendar 9 01 04 Conclusion Conclusion 01 01 JB code tsl.42.10not 06 10.1075/tsl.42.10not 163 Miscellaneous 10 01 04 Notes Notes 01 01 JB code tsl.42.11dat 06 10.1075/tsl.42.11dat 169 Miscellaneous 11 01 04 Data sources Data sources 01 01 JB code tsl.42.12the 06 10.1075/tsl.42.12the 171 Miscellaneous 12 01 04 The inflectional features of pronominal demonstratives The inflectional features of pronominal demonstratives 01 01 JB code tsl.42.13ref 06 10.1075/tsl.42.13ref 175 Miscellaneous 13 01 04 References References 01 01 JB code tsl.42.14lan 06 10.1075/tsl.42.14lan 193 Miscellaneous 14 01 04 Language Index Language Index 01 01 JB code tsl.42.15nam 06 10.1075/tsl.42.15nam 197 Miscellaneous 15 01 04 Name Index Name Index 01 01 JB code tsl.42.16sub 06 10.1075/tsl.42.16sub 203 Miscellaneous 16 01 04 Subject Index Subject Index 01 JB code JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 01 JB code JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 https://benjamins.com Amsterdam NL 00 John Benjamins Publishing Company Marketing Department / Karin Plijnaar, Pieter Lamers onix@benjamins.nl 04 01 00 19991215 C 1999 John Benjamins Publishing Company 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027229434 WORLD 03 01 JB 17 Google 03 https://play.google.com/store/books 21 01 00 Unqualified price 00 36.00 EUR 01 00 Unqualified price 00 30.00 GBP 01 00 Unqualified price 00 54.00 USD
