Is there a linguistic continuum? How does it correlate with social factors? The complex organization of an urbanizing Caribbean society and the highly variable nature of mesolectal speech norms and behavior present a challenge to sociolinguistic variation theory.<br />The second chief aim is to elucidate the nature of mesolectal grammar. Creole studies have emphasized the structural integrity of basilectal varieties, leaving the status of intermediate mesolectal speech in doubt. How systematic is urban JC grammar? What patterns occur when basilectal creole constructions alternate with acrolectal English elements? Contextual constraints on choice of forms support a picture of the mesolect as a single grammar, variable yet internally-ordered, which has evolved a fine capacity to serve social functions.<br />Drawing on a year&#8217;s fieldwork in a mixed-class neighborhood of the capital city, the author (a speaker of JC) describes the speech community&#8217;s history, demographics, and social geography, locating speakers in terms of their social class, occupation, education, age, sex, residence, and urban orientation. The later chapters examine a recorded corpus for linguistic variables that are phono-lexical (palatal glides), phonological (consonant cluster simplification), morphological (past-tense inflection), and syntactic (pre-verbal tense and aspect marking), using quantitative methods of analysis (including Varbrul). The Jamaican urban mesolect is portrayed as a coherent system showing stratified yet regular linguistic behavior, embedded in a well-defined speech community; despite the incorporation of forms and constraints from English, it is quintessentially creole in character. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/veaw.g17.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027248756.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027248756.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/veaw.g17.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/veaw.g17.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/veaw.g17.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/veaw.g17.hb.png 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.01lis xi 1 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of Tables</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.02lis xv 1 Miscellaneous 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of Figures</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.03lis xvii 1 Miscellaneous 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">List of Maps</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.04ack xix 1 Miscellaneous 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Acknowledgments</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.05int 1 1 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Introduction</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.06the 23 1 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Urban Speech Community of Kingston, Jamaica</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Urban Speech Community of Kingston, Jamaica</TitleWithoutPrefix> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.07fie 65 1 Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Field Methods and Data Analysis</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.08pho 83 1 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Phonolexical Variation: Palatal Glides</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.09pho 121 1 Chapter 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Phonological Variation: Consonant Cluster Simplification</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.10cre 167 1 Chapter 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Creole Pre-Verbal Past-Markers</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.11pas 223 1 Chapter 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Past-Marking by Verb Inflection</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.12soc 267 1 Chapter 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Social Variation in the Veeton Speech Community</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.13ref 297 1 Miscellaneous 13 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">References</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.14ind 321 1 Miscellaneous 14 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Index of Language Varieties</TitleText> 10 01 JB code veaw.g17.15ind 323 1 Miscellaneous 15 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Index of Subjects</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 19990615 1999 John Benjamins 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027248756 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 00 132.00 EUR R 01 00 111.00 GBP Z 01 gen 00 198.00 USD S 1147 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code VEAW G17 Hb 15 9789027248756 13 99013046 BB 01 VEAW 02 0172-7362 Varieties of English Around the World G17 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Urban Jamaican Creole</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">Variation in the Mesolect</Subtitle> 01 veaw.g17 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/veaw.g17 1 A01 Peter L.
