Together with its functional equivalent, obligatory pronominal agreement, zero is both extremely widespread cross-linguistically and highly frequent in natural text. In the domain of reference, zero represents, somewhat paradoxically, either anaphorically-governed high continuity or cataphorically-governed low topicality. And whether in conjoined/chained or syntactically-subordinate clauses, zero is extremely well-governed, at a level approaching 100% in natural text. The naturalness, cross-language ubiquity and well-governedness of zero have been largely obscured by an approach that, for 30-odd years, has considered it a typological exotica, the so-called "pro-drop" associated with a dubious "non-configurational" language type. The main aim of this book is to reaffirm the naturalness, universality and well-governedness of zero by studying it from four closely related perspectives: (i) cognitive and communicative function; (ii) natural-text distribution; (iii) cross-language typological distribution; and (iv) the diachronic rise of referent coding devices. The latter is particularly central to our understanding the functional interplay between zero anaphora, pronominal agreement and related referent-coding devices. 04 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475/z.204.png 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_jpg/9789027212399.jpg 04 03 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/475_tif/9789027212399.tif 06 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_front/z.204.hb.png 07 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/125/z.204.png 25 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/1200_back/z.204.hb.png 27 09 01 https://benjamins.com/covers/3d_web/z.204.hb.png 10 01 JB code z.204.001pre xiii xvi 4 Miscellaneous 1 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Preface</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.s1 Section header 2 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Natural zero</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.01ch1 3 26 24 Chapter 3 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 1: The communicative ecology of&#160;zero&#160;anaphora</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.02ch2 27 68 42 Chapter 4 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 2: The grammar of referential coherence as&#160;mental processing instructions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.03ch3 69 100 32 Chapter 5 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 3: Zero and the rise of pronominal agreement</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.04ch4 101 128 28 Chapter 6 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 4: Early diachrony of pronominal agreement</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">A&#160;case study in Ute</Subtitle> 10 01 JB code z.204.05ch5 129 156 28 Chapter 7 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 5: Is zero anaphora a typological exotica?</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.06ch6 157 186 30 Chapter 8 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 6: Verbal zero anaphora</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">Verbless clauses</Subtitle> 10 01 JB code z.204.07ch7 187 206 20 Chapter 9 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 7: Cataphoric zero</TitleText> <Subtitle textformat="02">Passive and antipassive voice</Subtitle> 10 01 JB code z.204.s2 Section header 10 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Structural zero</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.08ch8 209 230 22 Chapter 11 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 8: Co-reference in relative clauses</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.09ch9 231 246 16 Chapter 12 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 9: Co-reference in verb complements</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.10ch10 247 280 34 Chapter 13 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 10: Co-reference in adverbial clauses</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.11ch11 281 318 38 Chapter 14 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 11: Zero, pronouns and clause-chaining</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.12ch12 319 340 22 Chapter 15 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 12: Promiscuous ill-governed zeros?</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.13ch13 341 388 48 Chapter 16 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Chapter 13: Zero and the puzzle of stranded adpositions</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.14bib 389 406 18 Miscellaneous 17 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Bibliography</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.15ind 405 ??? 1 Miscellaneous 18 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Index</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.15gin 407 412 6 Miscellaneous 18 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">General index</TitleText> 10 01 JB code z.204.16lin 413 414 2 Miscellaneous 19 <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">Language index</TitleText> 02 JBENJAMINS John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 John Benjamins Publishing Company Amsterdam/Philadelphia NL 04 20170119 2017 John Benjamins B.V. 02 WORLD 13 15 9789027212399 01 JB 3 John Benjamins e-Platform 03 jbe-platform.com 09 WORLD 21 01 06 Institutional price 00 99.00 EUR R 01 05 Consumer price 00 36.00 EUR R 01 06 Institutional price 00 83.00 GBP Z 01 05 Consumer price 00 30.00 GBP Z 01 06 Institutional price inst 00 149.00 USD S 01 05 Consumer price cons 00 54.00 USD S 552017045 03 01 01 JB John Benjamins Publishing Company 01 JB code Z 204 Hb 15 9789027212399 13 2016029687 BB <TitleType>01</TitleType> <TitleText textformat="02">The Story of Zero</TitleText> <TitlePrefix>The </TitlePrefix> <TitleWithoutPrefix textformat="02">Story of Zero</TitleWithoutPrefix> 01 z.204 01 https://benjamins.com 02 https://benjamins.com/catalog/z.204 1 A01 T.
