An attempt to clarify a number of phenomena arising from a communicative approach to the teaching of language, and in particular the teaching of English to non-natives. Starting from a general consideration of aspects of discourse, W. discusses particular pedagogic problems and procedures involved in comprehending, reading, composing and writing.
