Annotation

W. and S. argue that the distinction between saying and implicating is not as simple as Grice suggests, that there is more to the interpretation of irony and metaphor than a mere knowledge of the maxims of conversation, and that the maxims are not all independently necessary for the generation of implicatures (and that in fact they can be reduced to a single principle of relevance).
