Research on the question of what and how much variation in learners' output can be attributed to L1 interference, and what and how much variation is part of the learners' interim grammar. This issue is approached on the pragmatic level: can the learners' pragmatic deficiencies be explained as cases of intercultural interference, or are they characteristic of the learners' communicative behavior qua learners?
