Within the theory of Functional Grammar, the author focuses on the question whether Dutch subordinating conjunctions or complementizers take up the same structural position as subordinating WH-elements (pronouns and adverbs), which is clause-initial position. It is argued that this is not so, but that they are in front of the 'clause proper', thus preceding subordinating WH-elements.
