Some factual and correlative uses of the traditionally implicative pattern 'if p then q' are analysed, so as to motivate them pragmatically, syntactically and diachronically. Semantic and syntactic differences between implicative and non-implicative uses of 'if' are discussed, and some distinctive features of the correlative uses pointed out.
