Annotation

A study investigating forms of inference in arguments. After sketching a functional theory of inference, the authors apply this theory to arguments in three potential fields of argument: legal, deliberative, and religious. The findings provide evidence for systematic differences in argument forms across fields, and for the ability of the functional theory to account for observed patterns of argument.
