Annotation

B.'s primary goals are (i) to recover how listeners in natural dialogues identify the question function of declarative questions (questions with the intonation pattern of of a declarative sentence), and (ii) which information is conveyed by the speaker if a declarative form is used instead of an interrogative one. Through a number of experiments B. examines the role of particles, intonation, rules such as the Gricean maxims and politeness-rules, and contextual features in giving an utterance the status of 'question'. Data from Dutch.
