B. examines stylistic strategies of involvement and detachment in 4 Swahili political texts by the former Tanzanian President Nyerere. The aim is to relate the findings to generic characteristics of the texts, in terms of preferences in Swahili political communication, and to demonstrate how genres can be interpreted as complexes of strategic devices used to establish, confirm, or alter an existing role-relationship between the political speaker and his audience.
