The author discusses the metaphors of 'development' and 'integration' which express our relationship with 'others', outside and inside our own society respectively. It is claimed that these metaphors, as a means of expression of our relationship with others, imply a specific role-relationship, a prototypical balance of authority, and a set of action types. It is concluded that our linguistic repertoire concerning development and integration is a typically Whorfian case.
