An analysis of the role of modifiers (such as politeness markers and hedges) as request pragmatic force indicators. It is argued that speech act modifiers are multifunctional in two ways: first, in that the same occurrence of a mofidier can serve both to modify social impact and to signal pragmatic force, and second, that in their social function modifiers can both mitigate and aggravate degree of coerciveness.
