The author re-examines the notions of indirectness and politeness as applied in requests. It is argued that the two notions do not represent parallel dimensions; indirectness does not necessarily imply politeness. The relationship between the two is examined in a series of experiments designed to tap native speakers' perceptons of politeness and indirectness in Hebrew and English.
