Introduction to a special issue of the Journal of Pragmatics, dealing with the relatioship between syntax-oriented and pragmatic approaches to language. 'Syntax-oriented approaches' is to be understood as to only include those theories of grammar which adhere a functional perpective on language. The article thus gives an overview of linguistic theories that aim to combine grammatical theory and pragmatics.
