After situating the articles in the second part of D. Carbaugh (ed) (1990: 'Cultural communication and intercultural contact'), the author discusses some theoretical issues in intercultural communication, such as the interactional coding of cultural identity, cultural frames, forms of performance, and the parameters of variation within intercultural encounters. Furthermore, he presents the tentative outlines of a model for a theory of intercultural communication.
