C. deals with questions concerning the proper choice of reference to individuals in discourse, using concepts from the 'dialogue game' approach (Carlson). Notions of definiteness, specificity and empathy are studied through the functional relationship of 'answerhood' (i.e. when does a sentence answer a question).
