On what a cognitive approach to communication has to be like. A cognitive theory of language has to be embedded within a general cognitive theory of behavior as a teleological activity. The notions of 'goal' and 'function' (which are to be distinguished) are to be central. Problems with the notion of 'intention' have to be overcome.
