Annotation
D. discusses the importance and role of convention in speech, through describing the existing theories on that subject. Three kinds of theories are distinguished: (a) Theories that claim there is a convention connecting sentences in a grammatical mood with illocutionary intentions; (b) Theories that look for a conventional use for each sentence; and (c) theories claiming there is a convention that ties individual words to an extension or intension.
